I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Quincy Jones this past week. Like myself, Quincy never learnt to drive and he paved the way for non-drivers in car-dominated America.
While reflecting on the brevity of life, I was reminded that we should all be aiming to ‘store up riches’ in the life to come. Our aim should not be the earthly success but rather eternal glory.
I have personally been storing up several Heavenly Ballon d’Ors and plan to display them alongside my Mid-Ulster Intermediate Leaugue B trophy in some sort of celestial trophy cabinet. Picture a rustic Welsh dresser just laden with all your divine rewards. Really gets you excited for what’s in store on the other side.
I don’t know if we get to request this sort of thing but I’d like it if Maradona was the one to greet me as I enter St. Peter’s Gates. We would have a lot to discuss: Las Malvinas, VAR technology, and all of my very impressive heavenly trophies. He wouldn’t be able to take any of his worldly winnings into heaven I suppose but maybe he gets a special something for putting manners on the English. ¡Hasta la victoria siempre!

In our fast-paced inter-connected 24 hour news cycle world, i try to make time for what matters most: elite low-level football and high quality religious education.
They let catholics play football now, and not that handsy up-in-the-air kind you get on the foreign channels, but football football. This, I have no problem with, i only mention it to show the awe-inspiring ability of (real) football to bring together all communities - even the difficult ones.
I pray for more football between even greater numbers of football players. One day, we’ll all be playing football in Our Father’s house which has many well-kept football pitches - one for every footballer. Of course, that’s too many - but it’s a nice thought.
